Small Town Newspapers: The Frontline of Democracy?

Ed Miller, Editor, and Teresa Parker, Publisher, Provincetown Independent

Local news organizations are on a downward spiral, as conglomerates and hedge funds gobble up local media.  In some areas of the country, there are news deserts.  On Cape Cod, there is less and less local news and more and more “cut and paste” from news syndicates.

Join us on June 10, as Ed Miller, Editor, and Teresa Parker, Publisher, of The Provincetown Independent discuss what communities lose when local coverage, and investigative journalism, disappear.  Does that impact voter turnout — or affect elected officials and corporate conduct?

Ed and Teresa also will discuss their nonprofit organization, the Local Journalism Project, created to strengthen community journalism, as well as public ownership of the enterprise that publishes the newspaper.

The two are Harvard graduates: he from the College, and both from the Graduate School of Education. A current Harvard student, Olivia Weeks, was the Summer Fellow this Club supported as an intern at the paper last summer.

The June 10 meeting also will be our annual meeting.  Join us at The DoubleTree for a lively discussion, delicious meal, and renewed friendships.
