The Harvard Club of Cape Cod is in for a special treat as George Howe Colt, Harvard ’76, joins us by Zoom in reading from and discussing his acclaimed book, The Big House: A Century in the Life of an American Summer Home. This New York Times Notable Book, a 2003 finalist for the National Book Award, is much beloved by so many of us who gather family and friends on the Cape. Please don’t miss what promises to be a wonderful event.
The Big House is a family memoir revolving around Colt’s last of 42 summers spent at his extended family’s multi-generational summer house on Wings Neck. To quote from the New Yorker review: “Colt’s account, like the house that lies at its center, is full of surprises and contains more than seems humanly possible: a family memoir, a brief history of the Cape, an investigation of nostalgia, a catalogue of local fauna, a study of class, and a meditation on the privileges and burdens of the past.”
Colt also is the author of Brothers, winner of the 2013 Massachusetts Book Award for nonfiction; The Game: Harvard, Yale, and America in 1968, a 2018 Massachusetts Book Award finalist; and November of the Soul, an insightful study of suicide. He has taught at Smith College and was for many years a staff writer at LIFE magazine. He lives in Western Massachusetts with his wife, Anne Fadiman.
There is no charge for this event and the deadline for registering is February 21, 2027.
