Post Event Description:
Harvard Magazine Editor Joanna Weiss

September 22, 2026 at the Hyannis Yacht Club

Joanna Weiss & Iris YobFour dozen members and friends of HCCC had the opportunity to meet and engage in conversation with Joanna Weiss, Editor of Harvard Magazine, on September 22. She became editor in April 2025, just as our alma mater was facing, and countering, accusations by the Federal government over endowment, curricula, international students, Federal grants, and DEI. (You may recall the “boxing gloves” cover illustration.) She described her role as an “amazing vantage point to tell stories about Harvard in the world.”

She told us about the ways she and her staff are making it easier for readers to engage with the harvardmagazine.com website and Facebook and Instagram presence. Her goals are to share even more photos of life on campus, offer stories of where people are taking their Harvard educations and use technology to increase the interaction between screen and print. There’s now also a weekly newsletter published every Friday “What we’re doing is being journalists,” she said. Joanna Weiss’ earlier experience includes 16 years as a metro and political reporter, arts reporter, and op-ed columnist at The Boston Globe.

Her Boston Magazine article “For Those Moms About to Rock,” has been optioned for a film by 20th Century Studios. Speaking of “moms who rock,” she and several women friends formed a rock band, The Lazy Susans, during Covid times and have appeared on national TV as guests on the Kelly Clarkson Show and in venues in the Boston area, including dive bars around Fenway.
