Dolphin Communication

April 8, 2026 at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Hyannis

Nearly sixty Harvard and MIT club members and guests gathered at the DoubleTree Hotel in Hyannis for lunch on April 8, 2026.

Following an enjoyable lunch, the group welcomed Dr. Laela Sayigh, a senior researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) and expert in marine mammal communication.  She discussed her fascinating, ongoing research with a cohort of resident bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota, Florida.  After a historical overview of the topic, she shared her robust data of recordings of dolphin whistles which are unique to individual animals.  She closed with a look into future research which will be greatly enhanced by Artificial Intelligence.

In addition to Dr. Sayigh, Sam Harp, VP for Advancement at WHOI, delivered an overview of the world-famous institute based on Cape Cod.
