Beethoven's Ninth Symphony....A Deep Dive
Friday April 12, 2024, 3 PM - 8:30 PM
Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole
The Falmouth Forum has kindly invited our members to a presentation by Thomas Forrest Kelly, the Morton B Knafel Professor of Music at Harvard University, which will recreate, with images and music, the experience of the premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Vienna, 1824. This timeless icon, which includes the beloved Ode to Joy, is having its 200th anniversary. We will meet in Woods Hole at the Marine Biology Laboratory (with reserved parking) for an afternoon tour, then to a campus dining room for provided drinks (wine, beer, and soft drinks), followed by a buffet dinner. We'll be then joined by our featured speaker, and MBL's Director, Nipam Patel. After dinner we will move to the auditorium to hear Professor Kelly's presentation (reserved seating).
Parking will be available, lot to be announced. Gather at the Swope Center, 5 North Street, Woods Hole. Tours of MBL will begin at 3 PM. The reception is at 5 PM followed by dinner at 6 PM. The presentation is from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM and will take place at the Clapp Auditorium in the Lillie Building at MBL on MBL Street, just a short walk from the Swope Center.
Harvard member attendance is limited to 26 since this is a Falmouth Forum event with many others attending.
The cost of the event is $50.
