Re-shoring -- Bringing Jobs Back to the US
Harry Moser, MIT '67, Economist
What is reshoring? This term refers to the activity of bringing jobs, particularly manufacturing jobs, back to the US. If a widget used to be made in America, and then got moved offshore, reshoring strives to bring it back to America. As recent events, both biological and political have shown, putting all your widget eggs in an offshore basket can have unpleasant consequences. Harry Moser, MIT '67, U. Chicago '81, has been actively working on reshoring since 2010.
In his talk, Harry described his work on promoting reshoring, or bringing jobs back to the US. Mr. Moser received a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1967, and an MBA from U. of Chicago in 1981. Before founding the Reshoring Initiative in 2010, he worked for high end machine tool supplier GF AgieCharmilles starting as President in 1985 and retiring at the end of December 2010 as Chairman Emeritus.
Harry was inducted into the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame 2010 and was named Quality Magazine’s 2012 Quality Professional of the year, FAB Shop Magazine’s Manufacturing Person of the year and to the Association for Manufacturing Excellence’s (AME) Hall of Fame 2021. He participated actively in President Obama’s 1/11/12 Insourcing Forum at the White House, won The Economist debate on outsourcing and offshoring, received the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Industry Advocacy Award in 2014 and the Made in America 2019 Reshoring Award. This event was organized by the MIT Club of Cape Cod and was co-hosted by that Club and the Harvard Club of Cape Cod.
