Peter R Bono, AB '67

Computer Scientist, VP Technology for the Harvard Club of Cape Cod

A mostly-retired computer scientist, Peter's interests include international travel, classical music, "oldies-but-goodies," stamp collecting, and reading. He is an avid international birder and served for many years as the President of the Cape Cod Bird Club.  He and wife, Elaine, have lived full-time in Yarmouth Port since 2005. Peter is a Vietnam-era veteran serving as a US Naval Officer.

Dr. Bono received his A.B. cum laude in Mathematics from Harvard College and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan. He has co-authored two books: CGM and CGI and PC Graphics Using GKS. He has also edited and contributed chapters to several other books. He has written, taught short courses, and lectured widely on topics related to standardization and systems integration.

Dr. Bono's research interests include collaboration, knowledge acquisition and data mining, and scientific and data visualization, including volume visualization for medical applications. He served as twelve years as an elected member of the Eurographics Executive Committee, representing all members residing in countries outside Europe. Dr. Bono was Associate Editor of the refereed journal, Computers & Graphics, from 1993 to 2007. 

He served as Chairman of the US Computer Graphics Standards Committee (X3H3) from 1979 to 1994 and as Chief Delegate for the US to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC24 from 1979 to 1989. During the development of the GKS, PHIGS, CGM, CGI, and IPI standards, he contributed substantially to their technical content.  In 1989, Dr. Bono received NCGA's Award for the Advancement of Standards in Computer Graphics.
