The Roles of Radiology in Modern Medicine

Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 11:30 - 2 PM, The Emerald Resort, Hyannis
Hosted by the MIT Club of Cape Cod

We invite you to a presentation by a panel of three eminent local radiologists -- a diagnostic radiologist, a radiation oncologist, and an interventional radiologist -- who will explain their individual specialties, the equipment they use, and how they work together and with other physicians to diagnose and treat disease. There will be time left after the presentations to ask the panel questions about the current state of radiology and/or where it may be headed as the field continues to take advantage of ever-advancing computer technologies and medical discovers.  The cost for the luncheon is $39, and registration is limited to 50 places.  Gather at 11:30 AM; lunch at noon; presentation at 1 PM.

dianaDr. Charles Diana, Diagnostic Radiologist
The starting point for treating any medical issues is a diagnosis, so the presentation will lead off with a diagnostic radiologist, Dr. Charles Diana, who attended Harvard College, graduating in 1978 in Biochemistry before attending Johns Hopkins Medical School, graduating in 1982. Dr. Diana then did a medical internship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, followed by a 3 year residency in Radiology at Johns Hopkins and a one-year Fellowship in Body Imaging (primarily CT and Ultrasound) at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Dr. Diana then worked as a general radiologist with Cape Cod Radiology Associates at Cape Cod Hospital from 1987 to 2006 before working at Shields Healthcare reading MRI scans until the present. Originally growing up in Melrose, MA (and a Red Sox fan), he now lives in Sandwich with his wife, Elizabeth (also a Radiologist), and 2 of 4 children who are still at home in high school.

canaday_400x400Dr. Daniel Canaday, Radiation Oncologist
If there is a diagnosis of cancer, the next step might be a referral to a radiation oncologist like Dr. Daniel Canaday, who attended MIT, graduating in 1989 with a BSEE in Course 6-1 (Electrical Engineering with a concentration in medical issues) before attending medical school at the University in Chicago and then doing his residency training in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. For the next 20 years he worked in radiation oncology at Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital. In 2016 he was the recipient of the Massachusetts Medical Society's Clinician-Of-The-Year award for Barnstable County. Two years ago Dr. Canaday become the Chief of Radiation Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. Originally from Boston (and a Red Sox fan), he now lives in Cotuit with his wife, Amy, and two grown children.

bakal_400x400Dr. Curtis Bakal, Interventional Radiologist
For a wide range of other diagnoses - for example, vascular occlusions, some cancers, or an abscess - then the next step might be a referral to an interventional radiologist for minimally-invasive treatments. Our interventional radiologist is Dr. Curtis Bakal, a graduate of Yale College, of Harvard Medical School (MD 1976), and of the TH Chan (Harvard) School of Public Health, (MPH 1979). He then practiced Interventional Radiology in NY before becoming Chairman of Radiology at Lahey Medical Center and Professor of Radiology at Tufts Medical School. Dr. Bakal was President of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) from 2001 - 2002 and has elected Fellowship honors as Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, Fellow of the American College of Radiology, and Fellow of The Cardiovascular Council of the American Heart Association. Last year Dr. Bakal was recipient of the SIR Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement and is currently Professor of Radiology Emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine. Originally from Brooklyn (and a Yankees fan), he now lives in Falmouth with his wife, Pam.
